Experience why a cruise is like nothing else in the world!
Imagine the thrill of endless activities, and new adventures at every port.
With the growing popularity of cruise vacations, more Canadians want to ensure a problem-free voyage. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada recommends that you take certain precautions to ensure your well-being during a cruise:
Carry a valid Canadian passport
when transiting through another country to join a cruise. Be prepared to hand over your passport to ship authorities, in accordance with administrative regulations. Keep a photocopy of your passport's identification page.
Leave a copy of your itinerary,
passport identification page, and travel and health insurance policy with family or friends in Canada.
Always check the ship's departure time
before going ashore. Protect your safety during shore excursions by confirming that tour guides are reputable and insured.
If you are handicapped or chronically ill,
enquire before booking whether your needs will be met aboard the ship.
The Low Cost of Luxury.
Luxury cruise lines offer a luxurious experience but also truly have an all-inclusive nature: luxurious accommodations, gratuities, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, meals, and entertainment are all included in the price. Some cruises lines also include round-trip air fare, port charges, travel insurance and most shore excursions in their pricing.
What to put in your carry-on bag.
Unlike a hotel where people check in on varying days and at varying times, folks check in to a cruise ship en masse. As such, a ship receives thousands of pieces of luggage in a matter of a few hours, which means your bags may not arrive in your stateroom until a few hours after you've boarded. Carry-ons are key. Pack everything needed to get you and your family through dinner time -- bathing suits, cameras, medications, sandals, sunscreen, a change of clothes and toiletries, and if you're traveling with small children, enough diapers and wipes to get you through a day. This packing strategy will save you should the airline or cruise line lose your bag, as you'll have many necessities on hand.
Cruises offer great value.
Some people don't consider taking a cruise because they think it is too expensive, but this is simply not the case. When you compare the cost of a cruise with the cost of comparable travel, accommodations, food and activities, you will quickly see that cruising offers great value for your vacation dollar.
Will I get seasick?
Many people fear seasickness; however, today's cruise ships are very stable and seasickness is a rarity. For those prone to seasickness, there are many remedies available to travelers to alleviate the symptoms.
A cruise ship is a great family environment.
Nearly every cruise line offers special programs and accommodations to families, and some even specialize in entire cruises designed completely around the needs and wants of a family. On these family-focused cruise lines, you will find special supervised areas of the ship where your children can go to do age-appropriate activities while you enjoy adult time.
You don't have to buy a special wardrobe.
There is no need to buy fancy clothing or a tuxedo to go on a cruise, although some cruises do require formal dress in specific on board restaurants. Your general packing list does not need to be much different from any other vacation; simply include clothing that is appropriate for the climate and expected weather conditions.
Are cruises all-inclusive?
Most cruises are not all-inclusive. In an effort to keep the basic price low, most mainstream cruise lines charge for everything that could be considered "extra", from wine to bottled water. As ships become more creative in their onboard activities, more things come at a price. However, the basic cruise fare still includes room, board, and the traditional cruise ship amenities such as a swimming pool and entertainment, so you can cruise and only have to pay for tips and drinks if your choose.
Do i have to dine at assigned times and with people I might not like?
Many cruise ships still feature traditional seating for dinner, with assigned times and tables. However, more and more cruise lines have open seating for dinner, which means you can dine when you like and at different tables. Since today's cruise ships also include alternative dining venues, you can vary your restaurant choices along with your table mates.
Are cruise ships too crowded?
I have never been on a cruise ship where I could not find a quiet corner to read a book or be alone with my spouse. Although a cruise ship with over 3000 passengers can seem crowded at times, it is no more so than most hotels, restaurants, or resorts. Cruise ship managers understand crowd control much like they do at Disney World. Luxury cruise ships usually have plenty of space per passenger and many spacious common areas.
I don't like beaches, so I won't like cruising, right?
Since most cruises go to the Caribbean, many people associate cruising with this beautiful part of the world. However, a cruise is more than sitting in the sun by the pool, sandy beaches, or sparkling blue waters. Cruise ships visit every continent, and anyone who loves to travel should be able to find a cruise destination that appeals to them. And, you only have to unpack once!
